He used to work at Van Cleef & Arpels, another famous brand. With a dream to start his own brand, he quit and decided to make a name for himself by starting out on his own.
Louis opened his own boutique in Paris at 8 Avenue Montaigne. He started the company with a small workshop in Paris, where he designed and created his own line of jewelry. The company quickly grew in popularity, and by the early 1900s, M. Gerard was one of the most well-known jewelry brands in France. Within 10 years, stores had opened in Gstaad, London, Lausanne, and Monte Carlo, and the firm's magazine advertising in 1980 announced that it was the leading exporter of French fine jewelry for the sixth year in a row.
The company continued to grow throughout the 20th century, expanding its product line and opening new stores across Europe. However, in 1985, the company saw a financial setback. This led to Gerard selling the company to a group of American investors.
However, the company launched itself again by opening a store at 16 Avenue Montaigne. Sadly, the firm again closed in December 1991. The company always remained true to its roots, creating beautiful handmade jewelry that is cherished by customers around the world.
